Baconton church breaks ground for family life center

BACONTON, GA (WALB) - A Baconton church is building a family life center aimed at keeping kids off the streets.

St. James Missionary Baptist Church is moving forward with their plans to build a Family Life Center. On Sunday, they held the ground breaking ceremony. The facility will be located behind the church and will serve young people and senior citizens. The center will be about 6,000 sq ft and will have an indoor basketball court, auditorium and computer classrooms. Pastor Lawrence Knighton says this will give young people a safe place to go to.

"We want to be able to do a lot of those things that can make a difference in the lives of young people," said Pastor Lawrence Knighton. "Because really these kids all they do is walk the streets because they don't have anything to do. We want to keep them from making babies and getting in trouble. We want to give them a safe haven."

Construction is expected to start in the next 30 days and could be complete by January of 2015.
