LEESBURG, GA (WALB) - A free car seat check is set at the Publix in Lee County from 4:00pm-7:00pm Wednesday.
Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among kids 1 to 19 and more than 70% of car seats are not used or installed correctly.
It's easy to know that an infant needs to be in a car seat, but what you might not know is that he or she needs to sit reverse of the driver until they are one-year-old and 20 pounds.
Seat belts are made to fit adults and use the support of your shoulder and hips, but a child who is less than eight years old might not get the necessary support they need.
"The seat belt is more so up on their stomach then their hips. So, what's going to happen is internal bleeding, so it is best practice and that's why it's the law to put them in a booster seat so it gets them on their hips and it also goes right across their shoulder where it needs to go," said Sergeant Daphne Lindsey.
Sgt. Lindsey says you should never put the shoulder strap behind your neck or under your arm pit when your seat belt is buckled because that makes you more prone to injury.
