An Atlanta area youth motivational speaker stopped by two Terrell County high schools Wednesday morning to teach the importance of abstinence as a teen.
Terrell County continues to have one of the highest rates of teen pregnancy in the state of Georgia. That's why high school officials and organizers with Family Connections came together to bring Jackie Brewton to the county. She spoke at Terrell County High School and Terrell Academy.
A grant from the Governor's Office for Children and Families is paying for Brewton to speak to teens about abstinence and the importance of making good choices.
"Teen pregnancy is something we are very concerned about in Terrell County and I think that's one of the reasons why we came up with a committee to study a curriculum and put some things in place to address concerns we have with our kids," said Terrell County High Principal Douglas Bell.
Brewton explained how a quick decision can change everything in the students' lives,"It is the nature of man to rise to greatness if greatness is expected of them. They don't realize that greatness is natural and that's what they have in them and they are settling for so much less than they deserve by some of the poor choices they are making."
Some students at Terrell County High say Brewton's message is already making a difference.
"It touched back at home with me because I understand some of the things she was saying," said Keavoydre Buchanan, Terrell County High student. "We go through things as teenagers that we might not understand at the time that it was wrong. It really touched me."
Brewton says a lot of teens make bad choices to medicate other problem areas in their lives. She hopes that each student at least walked away from today's discussion knowing they deserve much more.
