HAHIRA, GA (WALB) -

Law enforcement in Lowndes County will be offering free car seat safety inspections on Saturday as part of National Child Passenger Safety Week.

The event will be held from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. in the parking lot of the Studstill Law Firm, which is sponsoring the event, located at 311 North Patterson street in Valdosta.

Sgt. Jim Griffin with the Lowndes County Sheriff's Office said one of the biggest problems they see is people not filling the registration cards for their car seats so that they can be notified if there are ever any recalls issued for their car seats.

"Here in Lowndes county," said Griffin, "we always make sure when we do the events we have the parents fill out the registration cards and mail them ourselves for the parents."

For anyone unable to make it to Saturday's event, Griffin said they can call their local law enforcement offices and schedule an appointment with a car seat technician. "All state troopers are mandated to go through and become child safety seat technicians. [The] local Valdosta Police department has a few technicians, and so does the city fire department," Griffin explained.

Haynes Studstill, a partner with the Studstill Law Firm, said she's glad the law firm is sponsoring the event.

Before I'm an attorney, I'm a mom. I'm just passionate about protecting children," said Studstill. "Once I became an attorney and became aware of what the laws were, I started realizing that a lot of my friends had their children out of a car seat before they're ready or in the wrong car seat."

This is the second year the law firm has sponsored the event.
