ATLANTA, GA (WALB) - The Atlanta Braves new stadium has officially been named.
The stadium, set to open in Cobb County in 2017, will be called Suntrust Park. The announcement came during a ground breaking ceremony Tuesday morning. Suntrust Park will include 41,500 seats with a three-deck design and an extensive canopy to shield more fans from sun and rain. The new stadium will cost an estimated $672 million dollars to build.
Governor Nathan Deal believes it will be a huge economic engine for the state. "It's gonna have a lot of additional amenities other than just the ball park," Governor Deal pointed out. "It's gonna have shops, it's gonna have some limited housing, mixed-use development surrounding the park itself."
The Braves' current stadium, Turner Field, was built in 1996 as part of the Summer Olympics and was turned into a baseball park for the Braves in 1997.
