Accused gunman in deputy shooting makes court appearance

MONROE CO., GA (WALB) - The man accused of killing a deputy and seriously injuring another in Monroe County made his first appearance in court Tuesday.

Christopher Calmer, 46, is charged with murder and five counts of aggravated assault, two counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, among other charges.

Two Monroe County Deputies, Michael Norris and Jeff Wilson exchanged gunfire with Calmer, who shot and hit both of them.

Norris was later pronounced dead, and Wilson was said to be recovering.

Calmer was also hit during the shootout, but is recovering as well.
