SYLVESTER, GA (WALB) - All city departments in Sylvester remain without phone service.
The phone system went down on Monday at Sylvester City Hall and the police, fire, and public works departments. Mayor Bill Yearta apologizes for the inconvenience for citizens trying to contact city offices, but it is not affecting emergency communication.
"We're going to take steps to prevent this from happening again, I can assure you," said Bill Yearta, Mayor of Sylvester. "Of course 911 was able to contact all departments like the fire and police because they use radio to contact them so that was not an issue trying to get the emergency folks out."
Mayor Yearta says he doesn't know what caused the phone lines to stop working. Crews worked all day to try to fix the problem. Yearta says the city plans to upgrade their phone system, so this doesn't happen again.
