LOWNDES CO., GA (WALB) - An early morning roll over crash in Lowndes County added to the increasing number of distracted driving crashes in South Georgia recently. Now, GSP is cracking down.
The driver of the SUV was headed south on Lakeland Highway when he got distracted while eating a sandwich, over corrected, and rolled the SUV several times.
Thankfully, no one was seriously injured but Corporal William West, with the GSP post in Valdosta, said if you get caught driving distracted you'll likely be getting a ticket and not just a warning. "Right now, we're implementing that we go ahead and wright the citation if it's feasible," West explained. "It's always up to the trooper or the officer on the roadway of course, but as many crashes as we're seeing on the roadway right now, we're tryin' to go ahead and make that step to get their attention."
West estimated that 25-30% of the crashes they respond to in their four county area are due to distracted driving. A child in the SUV involved in the crash Monday morning received a minor head injury but was okay. The driver is being charged with distracted driving.
