DAWSON, GA (WALB) - Terrell County commissioners say something needs to be done to keep emergency responders working in the county.
EMS officials say the salary offered isn't competitive with surrounding counties to keep new personnel in Dawson.
Commissioners agreed the problem needed to be addressed but say not much can be done until next year's budget approval.
"All we can do is try to recruit new people. But we can't change the pay scale right now," said Chairman Wilbur Gamble. "If we did, then we'd have to cut expenditures somewhere else, and that's a lot harder to do than you think."
EMS officials say there are at least five EMT's that have stuck around in the last 25 years.
Commissioners will consider a tax increase for next year's budget or privatization to help fund EMS services.
