JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Dewayne Thompson, arrested Monday in the kidnapping of Katelyn Beard, has been denied bond in Jackson Municipal Court. He's charged with capital murder, aggravated assault, kidnapping and auto theft.

Thompson made his first court appearance Monday evening, hours after authorities located Beard's body in a ditch in rural Pocahontas.

Beard's body was found just before noon Tuesday, off Darden Road, near the scene of a morning search. Jackson Police Chief Lee Vance says drugs would have played a role in her death.

The coroner said her body had been dumped at least two days, and she was shot in the head.

Beard was abducted Sunday morning, between 6:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. from 4244 Lynda Street in Jackson. The Mississippi Highway Patrol issued an Amber Alert Sunday night.

Thompson was taken into custody Monday, just a few blocks away from the home where police say Beard was shot.

Tuesday morning he provided investigators with clues as to where her body was located. Police found her clothes then located her in a ditch off Darden Road. questions still remain as to why she was murdered.

"The motive is unclear the only thing that he's indicated is that they were consuming drugs together, but as far as specifically why he's committed this murder, he hasn't told us that," said Chief Lee Vance, Jackson Police Department.
