VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

The Valdosta Fire Department is looking to hire more firefighters and at the same time educate citizens about what it takes to become a firefighter.

The fire department will hold a career expo at the fire station located at 106 S. Oak Street in Valdosta on Tuesday, September 9th from 1 p.m.-4 p.m.

Representatives from Wiregrass Georgia Technical College and Valdosta State University to provide information about classes and programs they offer that can give you the education you need to become a firefighter. Representatives from Lowndes County 911 service, Moody Air Force Base Fire Department, and recruitment representatives from Moody Air Force Base will also be at the expo.

"Through this, we're trying to expose everyone to fire service but at the same time it gives us the opportunity to accept applications [as well as] any other department that's here and open to accepting applications," said Valdosta Fire Chief Freddie Broom.

The Valdosta Fire Department currently has 9-10 vacancies, according to Chief Broom. Interested applicants will need to fill out an application package when they come to the expo. Packages can also be picked up and filled out in advance by visiting the fire department's HR office located at Valdosta city hall or by contacting the fire department at 229-333-1835.

"The more the community understands about the services we provide, we're able to provide a better level of service to them," Chief Broom said.

The application deadline is September 19th.
