Man injured in Statesboro bar fight dies

STATESBORO, GA (WTOC) -

A young man hurt in a confrontation with an employee of the bar Rude Rudy's in Statesboro has died.

Police say Michael Gatto, 18, suffered major head injuries after the incident on Thursday.

The Statesboro Police Department said Grant Spencer, 20, was taken into custody and charged with aggravated battery in the case.

Officers responded to Rude Rudy's shortly after midnight Thursday and located Gatto non-responsive with head injuries. He was transported to East Georgia Regional Medical Center and then flown to Memorial in Savannah where he later died.

Spencer was an employee of the bar.

Rude Rudy's was closed Thursday night, but a statement posted on the bar's Facebook page stated, "Our deepest sympathies and prayers go out to the Gatto family. At the time of the incident, the employee in question was not working. His employment at Rude Rudy's has since been terminated. Rude Rudy's will continue to do everything possible to assist in the investigation. Due to the gravity of the situation, Rude Rudy's will not make further comments until the investigation has been completed. Out of respect for the Gatto family and to further assist authorities in their investigation, Rude Rudy's will be closed for the evening."

Georgia Southern University gave a statement to Gatto's family and friends.

"The entire Georgia Southern University family is deeply saddened by this tragic event and our thoughts and prayers are with Michael's family and friends during this very difficult time," said Brooks A. Keel, Ph.D., president. "My heart is broken by this tragedy that we now face. I call on the Eagle Nation to rally together in support of Michael Gatto, the Gatto family and friends and each other."

Counseling services are available to assist and support the campus community at the University Counseling Center. Student's who are in need of counseling resources after 5 p.m. may request to speak with the Counselor-On-Duty by calling University Police at 912-478-5234.

The incident is currently under investigation by the Statesboro Police Department.
