VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) - The music could be heard, and the students and could be seen, all across the front lawn at VSU Thursday afternoon for VSU's annual event known as "The Happening." It's an opportunity for students to learn about organizations on campus and throughout Valdosta.
It's the campus's most popular event of the year.
"It's definitely great just to see everybody and you even get to meet new people just by playing random games," said VSU senior Amanda Mcrae. "I know I played a game with one girl, I was like, 'I don't even know who you are but it's really cool.'"
Many of the vendors were student-run campus organizations. Lashay Ingram was representing Element X Fashion Models, looking to help freshman adjust to campus life.
"We really want to reach out to the younger crowd, the freshman, because we focus a lot on self confidence. That's what we were founded upon, helping freshman feel empowered and confident to walk through the union without feeling ashamed or anything," said Ingram.
Other students were helping represent Valdosta businesses, but said they were also looking forward to walking around and seeing what Valdosta has to offer students.
"I just like to go out and see what Valdosta has to offer around here because I'm new here. So, I'd like to see everything that Valdosta has to offer," said Brandon Graves, a VSU student, when asked what he was most looking forward to. Graves and a friend were at the event representing Las Banderas car wash, handing out free car wash coupons to students.
Even students who have been to the event several times before said they still look forward to it every year. "Just to see how VSU is happenin' and expandin' with different organizations," said fifth year senior Lester Moore, III. "It's just good that they're trying to help the kids."
And students definitely took advantage of the opportunity Thursday, making VSU's front lawn a very happening place.
