Jasper County kicks off Backpack Buddies program

JASPER CO., SC (WTOC) -

Jasper County schools kicked off the 2nd annual Backpack Buddies program on Thursday.

The Antioch Educational Center and the Jasper County Rotary Club are teaming up this year to make sure 200 kids in Jasper County don't go hungry over the weekend. With Backpack buddies, kids take home a book bag filled with nutritious food every Friday during the school year.

"Food insecurities affect children in very profound ways - behavior problems, cognitive abilities. Children can't learn if they're hungry. When children go home on the weekend and they come back, they're prepared, ready, and willing to learn with the help of this kind of program," Vice Chair of Backpack Buddies Rodney Brown said.

Backpack Buddies is accepting cash and food donations.

Donations to Backpack Buddies can be sent to P.O. Box 1930, Ridgeland, SC, 29936.
