CORDELE, GA (WALB) - Neighbors say 35-year old Deon Ray was punched in the face and died after his head hit the concrete. Now, Cordele Police are looking for a suspect.
Neighbors and relatives are still in shock that something like this happened to someone they said got along with everyone.
A memorial of stuffed animals marks the spot where Deon Ray was killed last night. Witnesses say this is where Ray's body landed after he got knocked out with one punch. EMS and police got there too late.
"When officers arrived, EMS arrived, they found the body to be completely unconscious and unresponsive. He was pretty much pronounced dead at the scene," said Cordele Police Detective Ketorie Sales.
Family members remember Ray as a loving father who always watched his kids off to school.
His uncle is a pastor at a nearby church.
"A young man was struck down in his prime. We know it's not in our hands. It hurts because like I said he was like a son to me. He really was a son," said his Uncle James Wedges.
Cordele Police have a person of interest. They're looking for him and hope to take warrants Friday.
The GBI was called to assist in the investigation, but in the meantime, more officers will be watching the complex.
"We will be foot patrolling the area just because the people are frightened or have fear of retaliation because of what people are saying about what's going on in the area," said Sales.
Anyone with any knowledge that can assist police is encouraged to call 229-276-2921.
The autopsy for Ray will be done Friday.
