N Ashley St in Valdosta blocked by Semi crash

VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

The Northbound lanes of North Ashley Street in Valdosta between Moore Street and Park Avenue will remain closed until about noon Wednesday as Georgia Power crews work to replace a light pole that was destroyed during an accident early Wednesday morning.

Around 6:50 a.m. Wednesday, a log truck that was not carrying any logs at the time was traveling North on North Ashley Street when it struck a light pole in front of the Hibachi Express restaurant. The light pole and various other debris was scattered all over the road, causing Valdost Police to shut down traffic in both direction for approximately 30 minutes. The Southbound lanes were reopened to traffic around 7:45 a.m.

Firefighters on scene said the driver of the truck was transported by ambulance to South Georgia Medical Center for treatment, but the drivers name and the extent of their injuries was not known at the time.

A resident at the apartment complex whose parking lot the truck came to rest in said he was surprised when he saw that something had happened because about a week ago he heard a noise similar to what he heard Wednesday morning when the accident happened but there was nothing going on.

"Wow, there's somethin' actually happenin,'" said Jeffrey Roland, as he described his reaction when he saw the crashed truck. "There's stuff all in the middle of the road, cops all comin' this way and zoomin' all up over the curbs and everything."

Drivers are encouraged to use Moore, Mary, and Alden streets to get around the accident area while Georgia Power crews work to repair the pole.
