ALBANY, GA (WALB) - A controversial movie brings rumors of violence this weekend.

"The Purge" threats have targeted several cities nationwide and now has surfaced in Albany. A poster on social media claims on August 30th from 8:00 pm to 6:30 am the purge will take place, and to "get your squad ready." It's a tag line that mimics the 2013 horror film, "The Purge."

Residents have showed their concern by emailing and calling WALB asking about its authenticity, according to officials they are taking the threats seriously.

Wendy Luster of the Albany Police Gang Unit said they have received anonymous calls cautioning them to be on the lookout for potential burglaries. Luster says they are prepared but hopes the threats fall through as they have in many other cities.

In Louisville, their "purge" was scheduled for August 15th but when the time came nothing happened. Many people were seen out on the streets, shopping, dining and spending time with their families. Residents in Louisville said they assumed it was a prank so they decided to enjoy themselves instead.

It's the same thing that happened in Spokane, Washington. Fliers were posted stating "August 22, 2014 everyone be downtown let's start a riot and hit up all the stores" but again business went on as usual.

Places like Savannah, Jacksonville, Oklahoma City and Denver are just a few other cities that received the threat within the last month. Their law enforcement agencies are also heavily monitoring the situation.

If anyone sees suspicious activity they are urged to contact police or Crime Stoppers at 436-TIPS.
