Albany approves new veterans memorial

Albany City officials okay construction on a Korean War Memorial downtown.

Tuesday night, commissioners approved the installation of a new $40,000 monument in Veterans Park, paid for with donations collected through American Legion Post 30.

Korean War Veteran and City Commissioner Tommie Postell says he's glad to see the support. "Being a Korean Veteran myself, we asked for them to do this, not just because of me but for the thousands and thousands of veterans that are Korean Veterans so that when they come to Albany they can see our monument at Veterans Park," Postell said.

It will be built next to memorials that were vandalized earlier this year. The city is trying to make sure surveillance cameras are focused on the monuments to prevent more vandalism.

The Korean War memorial is expected to be unveiled in November.
