Dozens apply to become a Lee County volunteer firefighter

LEE CO., GA (WALB) -

Two dozen people showed up at the Red Bone Fire Station in Lee County to apply to become volunteer firefighters.

The county phased out volunteers more than 20 years ago but wants to restart some volunteer stations to provide fire protection to underserved areas.

"We need volunteers, and it'll save us money,” said Ron Rabun, Lee County Manager. “It'll be important to help people's insurance rates and structures and hopefully, we'll get it going and it'll save people a little premiums on their house insurance rates for fire."

The county budgeted for 12 volunteer firefighter positions this year. They'll do background checks soon on those who signed up. They hope to start training 18 to 20 potential volunteers next month.
