Lee County Fire Department holds volunteer meeting

LEE CO., GA (WALB) -  Lee County officials are holding a meeting to find volunteer firefighters for the Philema department. The meeting got under way here at about 6 p.m. on Monday. EMS Director Bobby Watkins is hoping to find 12 volunteer firefighters to help out at only this department for now.

Lee County had a volunteer department through the 80's and early 90's but Watkins says it dwindled out when the county started offering paid positions. Watkins is hoping to find the help he needs for the Redbone district.

Lee County just got graded for ISO numbers and saving homeowners money on insurance premiums is the number one goal right now.

"The biggest thing is just to help our ISO rating. Maybe receive a better grade on our ISO with adequate manpower," said Watkins.

Lee County currently has an ISO rating of 6 in most parts of the county but up in the North end the rating is a 9, costing homeowners thousands of dollars. The goal is to rebuild the volunteer component that Lee County once had. If this is successful, the program could go to other departments in Lee County.
