Hospital group discusses the future

CORDELE, GA (WALB) - A group appointed by Governor Nathan Deal gathered in Cordele to continue efforts of improving small hospitals.

Monday morning, the Rural Hospital Stabilization Committee looked at models of free-standing Emergency Rooms and how they work in rural areas, where emergency care would be distinctly separate from hospitals.

They also discussed how rural hospitals can work together to better understand the legal matters in Georgia.

"This is definitely just a very small first step in what is a very large topic of access to healthcare in rural areas," said one of the committee members.

Governor Nathan Deal created the Rural Hospital Stabilization Committee in March to build communication between hospitals and the state.

This was this second meeting of it's kind. In June, the group kick started the committee in Atlanta.
