"Hands Across The Borders" campaign kicks off

LOWNDES CO., GA (WALB) -

Law enforcers in Lowndes County are stepping up patrols this week to crack down on unsafe drivers.

It's part of their annual "Hands Across The Borders" campaign. Law enforcement agencies in border counties of six southern states will work together and conduct random road checks and extra patrols ahead of Labor Day weekend.

"This shows that not only does each department cooperate within the county, but we cooperate with each other across the borders," said Sergeant Mike Adams with the Lowndes County Sheriff's Office. "The cooperation is to reduce the number of fatalities, crashes, injuries, and, of course, arrests."

The Lowndes County Sheriff's Office will begin operating their checkpoints Tuesday at noon.
