A late night boat crash on Lake Blackshear led to search on the water overnight. It happened around 11:45 pm Sunday, after officials say a boat struck a boathouse located at 256 Scenic Route.
Wood and debris now floats, scattered around this boathouse on Lake Blackshear at a home on Scenic Route in Crisp County.
Just hours before, around midnight, authorities say a boat came speeding through the water, crashing through a dock and hitting another, before plowing through the boat house.
The owner came to check on the boathouse as the power boat sped away.
After a search on land and water, authorities say the boat involved in the hit and run, the driver, Michael Hromalik and a passenger were located at a landing near Veteran's State Park.
"A deputy actually stopped a white pickup truck pulling a boat with damage on it in front of the retreat," said CPL. Bob Holley of the Georgia DNR.
Hromalik was then taken into custody. DNR officials say his blood alcohol level was almost double the state limit, which is .08.
"Anytime that you have an accident. You're supposed to remain at the scene to report the damage so it is a hit and run," said Holley.
Michael Hromalik is an employee of Caravell Boat Group, the maker of the vessel involved in the crash.
Members of the company were staying at a resort off Lake Blackshear for a boat show. It's unclear if Hromalik was authorized by the group to use the vessel.
Authorities say the crash left thousands of dollars worth of damage.
"One of the vessels appears to be a total loss. The vessel that was struck in its lift in the boat house is possibly a total loss. A rough estimate would be probably be in excess of $65,000 to $70,000," said Crisp Co. Sheriff Billy Hancock.
Hromlik faces charges including Boating under the Influence and driving too fast for conditions. We have reached out to Caravelle Boat Group for comment on the crash. They have not responded to our calls.
