TURNER CO., GA (WALB) -

The WALB news app helped a Turner County Deputy catch a man accused of shooting at a Fitzgerald Police Officer.

Deputy Jason Cole responded to a call about a suspicious person walking along Georgia Highway 107 this afternoon. He found 22-year-old Anthony Johnson and asked if he needed a ride. When he picked up his phone to call Johnson's mother, he saw our news alert saying Johnson was wanted in Fitzgerald.

"This person that I was standing with, it had his picture and that was the first thing that pulled up,” said Deputy Jason Cole, Turner County Sheriff's Office. “Then I realized who I had, so I really didn't give him the opportunity to get away from me, so I went ahead and arrested him and put him in the car.

Deputy Cole says he uses the WALB app daily. Johnson is accused of firing four gunshots early this morning as he drove away from a Fitzgerald officer questioning him about domestic violence. He's charged with aggravated assault against an officer.
