Man taken to hospital after Slappey wreck

ALBANY, GA (WALB) - A single car crash has slowed traffic near the intersection of Palmyra and North Slappey Boulevard in Albany.

APD says Donald Phelps Jr., 32, was traveling south on Slappey Boulevard in a 2008 Kia Rondo, when he veered over into the northbound lane of traffic. He left the road, struck the curb, and then hit two poles before coming to a stop, and a fire started on impact.

"We found an SUV into the pole up here with a driver trapped. The vehicle was smoking and bystanders had actually used extinguishers to put out the fire prior to our arrival," said Keith Ambrose of AFD.

Albany Bike Police were the first to arrive on the scene and were able to use extinguishers to put out the flames. McDonald's employees also pitched in to help, giving water to first responders and bystanders.

When the fire department arrived, they proceeded with removing Phelps from the vehicle.

He was transported by EMS to the hospital for treatment, and police say Phelps is in fair condition.
