UPDATE: Valdosta police have murder suspect in mind

VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) - The Valdosta Police Department has a suspect in mind, and a possible motive, in the death of Kenneth Johnson last week, but they are tight-lipped about both.

Crime scene tape, police cars, and investigators filled the parking lot of Applebees on Inner Perimeter Road around 1:30 Friday morning after a double shooting there.

"This morning, around 1 a.m., officers responded to the area of 3254 Inner Perimeter Road in reference to a shooting," said Valdosta Police Department Lieutenant Aaron Kirk.

As an investigator draped a white sheet over the body of 39 year-old Kenneth Johnson, the woman he was with at the time of the shooting, 41 year-old Lashandra Williams, was being treated at South Georgia Medical Center for multiple gunshot wounds.

"Officers arrived on scene, found two gunshot victims in the parking lot being assisted by other people," explained Kirk. "Both had been shot. Mr. Kenneth Johnson was pronounced dead on scene."

Friday afternoon, a Valdosta Police Department K-9 unit was back in the area in front of the restaurant looking for clues that may help investigators identify a suspect and motive.

"We don't know what the motive is yet. That's why we're trying to investigate to find out. We don't know if it was just a robbery or if they were targeted or what the motive might have been," Kirk emphasized.

Family and friends at Johnson's home Friday afternoon didn't want to speak on camera, but said Johnson was a good father, uncle, nephew, and that he had a heart of gold. They said he was just a good, all around person.

Police are also trying to figure out if Johnson and Williams were at the restaurant together. As of 5 p.m. Friday, Williams was in fair condition at SGMC and investigators hoped that as she continues to recover she'll be able to help them bring the shooter to justice.

The Valdosta Police Department issued this release-

Upon arrival of emergency personnel, two victims were located. Kenneth Johnson, 38 year old Valdosta resident received multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

A woman who was with Johnson, also had gunshot wounds, and she is currently being treated for her injuries. Evidence is being collected and investigated at this time by Valdosta Police Department personnel.

Currently, a motive for the incident is being investigated.
