WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) -

A fourth grader in Wilmington caught the attention of people nationwide, including Ellen DeGeneres.

Instead of presents, Gunner Robinson asked friends and family to give him shoes for his 9th birthday so he could donate them to children in Pender, New Hanover and Brunswick Counties.

Gunner ended up collecting 400 pairs of shoes and distributed them to school officials Monday morning. Counselors are taking the shoes to various communities to distribute to families in need.

The producers of Ellen heard about Gunner's good deed and called him for an interview. They featured his story on the talk show's website: http://bit.ly/1ABDZca
