16 year old to graduate from Wiregrass with two degrees

Brianna Johnson Brianna Johnson

On Wednesday, As 16 year-old Brianna Johnson practiced the computer network and computer support skills she learned at Wiregrass over the past two years, she was also preparing to graduate from the technical college on August 29th.

She said becoming a college student at 14 years old was daunting, but something she also looked forward to.

"I was really nervous, of course, to be the youngest person, and in my field, especially, I was one of usually only two girls in the class," Johnson said. "But, I was also very excited for the experience and to have this opportunity."

Brianna is already putting that experience to use by working part time in the I-T department at Chancey Drug in Valdosta. She said being home schooled made it challenging to adjust to the classroom at first. "Once I did kind of acclimate, I really enjoyed it and I enjoyed the classroom discussions and having that in-person learning experience," Johnson admitted.

College classes may not be the right thing for every high school student, but Brianna recommends it for students looking for a challenge. "In general, I think it's a really good option. And, if a high schooler feels like it, then it really is a wonderful thing to be able to accomplish," said Johnson.

And she had some advice for those who may try it. "Have clear goals in mind. That's really helpful in keeping you organized and making sure that you do your best. But also, to have fun and stay balanced."

Brianna eventually hopes to pursue a Bachelor's Degree in computer networking and someday become a teacher.
