LOWNDES CO., GA (WALB) -
The speed limit on a portion of I-75 in Lowndes County could soon go up.
Thursday night, the Valdosta city council will vote on whether to increase the speed limit from 65 to 70 miles per hour between exits 16 and 18. That portion of I-75 lies within the city limits of Valdosta which is why the city is allowed to control the speed limit.
GDOT conducted a study on that section of the interstate and requested the city raise the speed limit. "Their numbers came back to show that the posted speed limit that's out there now is to low. So, with the 85 percentile that they received, that number is showing that they should increase the speed limit back up to 70 mile per hour," said Larry Ogden, Valdosta Engineer Traffic Manager
If the increase is approved, the new speed limit would take effect as soon as the DOT gets new signs posted.
