High schools prepare athletes as heat wave comes

LEE CO., GA (WALB) - High schools are preparing to make sure football players are safe as football season begins in the middle of a heat wave.

Lee County and Westover will play Saturday at one o'clock at Trojan Field when the feels like temperature could be well over 100 degrees. Staying hydrated will be important especially important for the rare afternoon game.

Dougherty County Sports Medicine Director Henry Rivers says pre-hydration is important, and they will take significant measures on Saturday.

"We're going to have ice buckets with towels and ammonia towels and that kind of stuff. Hopefully we're looking into some of the cool zone fans. Make sure they stay good and hydrated when they come off the field," said DCSS Director of Sports Medicine Henry Rivers.

Rivers wants athletes to start drinking water and Powerade for Saturday as early as today.
