Worth Co. residents petition for better fire dept.

WORTH CO., GA (WALB) -

North Worth County residents have made a petition for permanent fire service.

Approximately 200 residents signed the petition, which will be presented to county commissioners Thursday night at the courthouse in Sylvester.

A volunteer fire station of two currently serves the county.

Residents expressed concern after the Insurance Services Office (ISO) rating of Worth County changed from Class 8 to Class 10.

The change in rating means a rise in homeowners insurance rates for county residents.

Tom Hunt, a Lake Blackshear homeowner, said the average response time to a fire from the Worth County Fire Department is 22 minutes.

Hunt said the petition's goal is to lower insurance premiums and to save lives.

"Money is one thing.  But the safety of our people and protection of our property is another," said Hunt.

Hunt explained the county plans to fund for four permanent firemen.

Warwick Mayor Juanita Kinchen said her city is working on funding for the other two required firemen.
