APD offers Open and Empty Initiative

ALBANY, GA (WALB) - New signs have been popping up at a few businesses in Albany.  The signs are part of a new initiative started by the Albany Police Department's Crime Prevention Unit.

The program encourages businesses to empty cash register drawers at the close of business and then leave the register open.

The unit has been out and about for the past couple of days dropping off the signs and they are out again visiting along South Slappey starting at 10:00 a.m. near the South Slappey Subway.

The plan is to let potential burglars know that there is no money inside the business to be stolen. Albany has been plagued by numerous business breakins in recent weeks, which cause huge repair bills for business owners.
