The city is working to make sure vandals don't strike the war memorials downtown again.
City Commissioner B. J. Fletcher says the city has purchased several security lights and a camera to install around the monuments. The memorials were vandalized with black spray paint ahead of Memorial Day this year, and in 2012.
Fletcher says the city commission hopes the system will ward off any crooks in the future. "Now when young people come to know about what Americans, about 1% of the total population of this country had fought for the freedoms that we enjoy. We can make sure that we do everything that we can to make sure that there won't be any vandalism on that because that is a very big part of this community and this country. They represent why we're standing here today."
The security camera and lights are expected to be installed before the Korean War monument is unveiled in November.
