How common will Common Core be in the future for SC schools?

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - With a new school year comes a lot of changes for students, but Common Core is one thing that is staying the same this year.

The Horry County School district referred WMBF News to the state's decision.  In fact, the State Department of Education is planning to replace Common Core standards with a new set of teaching standards, next school year.

It was only the end of this school year that Governor Haley signed off on that idea. For this year, because Common Core will be the basis for assessment, it will continue to be the basis for instruction. The goal for the State Board of Education is to come up with new standards for the 2015-2016 school year. These standards will be available for public review in November, brought to the state board in January and get final approval by March. In the meantime, Common Core will be common in the classroom.

It's a controversial topic which has strong supporters on both sides. Common Core was introduced to raise math and English scores across the nation, as a requirement in schools across the country. The supporters say Common Core means learning the same from school to school and state to state, in English Language Arts and math, so all our students are equally prepared for college and eventually the job market.

The reaction from some: it's too hard, confusing, and we're not seeing results.

"Some people are meant to be engineers, and some people are meant to be artists, they probably learned completely different ways," said Horry County resident Erika Pike. "Why do we all have to be the same? We're not all the same, we don't learn the same, we don't teach the same, so I don't really think that is effective."

Neither does the state, so Common Core changes are coming. However, for this school year, you can expect Common Core to be implemented in Horry County Schools one last time.
