HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - You may not know when they are or where they are going to be, but because of the CAST Coalition, folks around Horry County will always know there is the possibility of driving up to a safety checkpoint.

"We don't want it to be some big secret that oh goodness the police are going to be here or there," said Sergeant Jeff Benton of the Horry County Sheriff's Department.

This past weekend, CAST announced law enforcement would conduct additional safety checkpoints around the county.

Their goal; to reduce the high rate of DUI crashes around Horry County.

"Would you want your family being on the roadway with an individual who's intoxicated or driving a vehicle without insurance," Benton asked.

In the two checkpoints by the coalition, officers issued 45 citations and 15 warnings.

They also made eight arrests and towed six vehicles.

"This goes to show us that there are a lot of violations on the roadway that we need to address," Benton said.

He said the eight arrests were for drug charges, driving without a license, and much more. They even found one wanted suspect in Marion County.

Officers only arrested one person for driving under the influence which CAST believes is a good thing. Their focus is on education and prevention, so they believe their work may be paying off.

"The folks that go out and have a good time, they know the opportunity for them to run into this CAST safety checkpoint at any given time is pretty good," Benton said. "We don't just go on Fridays or Sundays, we may have one on a Monday."

The CAST Coalition says these checkpoints are not about writing tickets. They do them because they believes it's their duty to keep everyone safe on their watch.
