Albany firefighters battle grass fire

ALBANY, GA (WALB) - About four acres of land caught fire on Sunday behind an Industrial site along U.S. Highway 19.

The fire happened along a dirt road where fire officials say there's been a lot of illegal dumping.

It's located across the highway from Proctor and Gamble Paper Products.

Luckily, a security guard saw the fire and called 9-1-1.

Battalion Chief Kelly Harcrow says they fire may have spread after a pile of trash caught fire.

The AFD spent the afternoon putting out hot spots. Harcrow says today the wind was in their favor.

“In this case the wind was in our favor and we were able to get ahead of it and stop it, and forestry, as a preventive measure, are going to cut a break around it for us,” says Battalion Chief Kelly Harcrow.

No structures were threatened, and no one was injured.

This is a developing story. Stay with WA LB for the latest.
