GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Volunteers would hand out 3,000 bags of school supplies to Upstate children in need Saturday as part of the United Way's School Tools Day.

Families began lining up outside the Phillis Wheatley Center as early as 4 a.m. to have their children's back-to-school shopping lists completed for free thanks to the annual School Tools project.

The doors opened at 9 a.m. and volunteers began distributing the bags of school supplies which were donated by community organizations and local businesses, including FOX Carolina.

Organizers said families with kindergartners through eighth-graders were eligible for the free supplies if their children qualified for Medicaid, free or reduced school lunch, or if the family received food assistance.

The supplies and backpacks for will be distributed on a first come, first served basis until 1 p.m. Saturday.
