GREER, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Every day, the Greer Soup Kitchen serves more than 100 people. From children to the elderly, families to individuals, they come for a hot meal. On a recent day, it was cream of chicken, rice, green beans, salad, and dessert on the menu. It's free and anyone can stop by, no questions asked.

Daily Bread Ministries has been operating it for more than 20 years. But now, they want to add to how they help in the community. They are working to build a homeless shelter for families and veterans called STEP or the Shelter to Empower People. It will be near the Greer Soup Kitchen on East Poinsett Street.

Right now, an abandoned home sits on the lot. Soon, Daily Bread Ministries plans to hold a ground-breaking for the STEP facility. The old home will be demolished and in its place, a new building with four family units will be built. Adam Wickliffe is the Chairman of the Daily Bread Ministries Board. He said, "It's not the kind of homeless shelter you would expect. This is more of a rehabilitation facility. We'll have four families come stay with us for 90 days. We'll give them the training they need to get out on the work force and leave homelessness."

Wickliffe said a recent $100,00 donation got the effort closer to ground-breaking, which is planned for Oct. 1. The total cost is expected to be approximately $475,000. Fundraising will continue until the goal is reached, with the possible help of grants. He said the new STEP facility will not mean any changes at the Greer Soup Kitchen. It will continue to operate as usual.

If you would like to help with volunteering or donations, contact the Greer Soup Kitchen or Daily Bread Ministries. "This program we think is going to be very successful at getting families out of homelessness in Greer," said Wickliffe. "We're actually trying to make a permanent change in someone's life."
