Operation Mini Thunder begins this weekend

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

State and local law enforcement officers are pulling into Albany for a weekend crackdown on drunk driving.

Operation Mini Thunder will begin Thursday night and run through Sunday.

Officers will check for impaired drivers with moving roadblocks and by patrolling streets.

Governor's Office of Highway Safety Director Harris Blackwood says the number of alcohol related accidents in the Albany area is on the rise, and many of them involve drivers who live outside the city.

"What we are trying to do is catch those folks before they become a problem in terms of having a crash," said G.O.H.S. Director harris Blackwood. "Running off the road or doing something that endangers them or others as well."

The Governor's Office of Highway Safety is planning another DUI crackdown in the Albany area next month.
