COLQUITT CO., GA (WALB) -

Authorities say they want to help you be better prepared if you're targeted by a criminal, and remind everyone that it's okay to fight back if you're attacked.

If a robber is after your belongings, experts say you should hand them over while trying to get away.

A training officer with the Colquitt County Sheriff's Office says creating distance and attention to the situation can help.

"Weapons of opportunity, keys, purse, [items] of that nature [can help] fight back against your assailant if possible. Studies show [many] victims of robbery don't fight back," said Lt. Tonero Bender wit Colquitt County Sheriff's Office.

Officers say you should also try to call 911 right away.

The Colquitt County Sheriff's Office offers self-defense training for those who are interested.
