Vacant houses invite problems

ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Albany firefighters want you to keep an eye on vacant properties in your neighborhood.

They say fires in vacant houses like the one yesterday on Cone Street are a dangerous and common problem.

If you see activity in an empty house call 911 or crime stoppers to report it.

Firefighters are put at a risk every time they fight a fire and authorities want the senseless fires in empty houses to stop.

"It puts our firefighters at risk but we have to go out and protect property plus we have to make sure no one is in there because we have a vagrant problem in the Albany, Georgia area," said Asst. Chief Rubin Jordan.

Yesterday's fire is still under investigation.

One firefighter had to go to the hospital after he was overcome by heat but he returned to duty last night.
