Suspected south Georgia serial robber stands trial

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

A suspected south Georgia serial robber will be in Dougherty County court for trial Thursday morning. Melvin Johnson was arrested for over 10 convenience store robberies in the span of two years.

Johnson has a string of convictions on his record and its not just armed robberies but arson as well.

Video obtained from officials back in 2009 shows the Tate Liquors store in Albany being held up. You can see a man point his gun at the convenience store clerk and force her to take money out of the register.

Police say Johnson was involved three other armed robberies in Dougherty County including a one in Glynn, four in Coffee, two in Ware as well as arson.

Johnson was captured in Jacksonville, Florida.

According to authorities Johnson was not alone in these robberies, Quinorris Brockington and Deandre Fairley were arrested in 2009 and pleaded guilty.

The trial was expected to begin at 8:45 a.m. at the Albany Municipal Court.
