Ag commissioner says farmers optimistic despite challenges

Posted: Updated:
ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Commissioner Black says Georgia farmers are staying optimistic despite some challenges this year. A wet, cool spring delayed planting for some crops.

Now a dry summer is forcing them to irrigate more.

“Were a couple of weeks late because of the damp cool spring that we had but generally I think most folks are upbeat with the conditions of the crop. we had some price issues with cotton that will be dealt with during the year,” says Agricultural commissioner Gary Black.

New estimates from the USDA predict a big year for Georgia peanuts. Experts expect yields to be down from last year's records.

But farmers planted a lot more peanuts this year.
