Canola oil is big business for Meridian plant

A unique south Georgia manufacturing plant needs more canola oil to meet its demand.

The Meridian plant in Decatur County makes several bio-degradable plastics using canola oil.

Georgia Agriculture Commissioner toured the facility and listened to the concerns of plant officials.

“We tried canola production in Georgia the last 20-30 years and its rises and falls with respect to how much we produce now we have some seed varieties that are working well an can be distributed throughout this region,” said Commissioner of Agriculture, Gary Black.

Plant officials say they need 500,000 acres of canola to meet the current capacity of the plant.
