Albany Water, Gas, and Light looks to expand internet services

Posted: Updated:
ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Albany Water, Gas, and Light is working on a new partnership to expand its internet services.

The utility is working on an intergovernmental agreement to run the South Georgia Regional Information Technology Authority, which now provides internet service to seven rural counties

"Agriculture is everything so if we can actually get internet connectivity to the schools, but specifically, commercially to the agriculture industry. There are some really big peanut processing facilities down there who would love to have high speed internet," says Stephen Collier, Assistant City Manager of Utilities.

It's not clear yet if WG&L would keep the revenue from SG RITA's current customers.

But the proposal is part of an overall plan to try to increase WG&L revenue, so the city can cut property taxes.
