SASSER, GA (WALB) -

Three jail inmates were injured after a fire truck, operated by the inmates overturned near Sasser, GA.

It happened Monday morning in Terrell County, about 5 miles outside of Sasser. The inmates, working as volunteer fire trustys at the Terrell County Jail, were en route to a fire call.

The Terrell County Fire Chief said the truck was turning from Bill Wittaker Road onto Sasser Herod Road when it hit a muddy area and lost traction, causing it to overturn.

"It carries 3,000 gallons," said Chief Edward Harvey. "Out here we cover 329 square miles so a lot of the area is in the county. We do not have hydrants so that's our main water source, Engine 1."

The chief says the truck is most likely a total loss. The county bought it for nearly $300,000 in 2006.

The three inmates were taken to an area hospital with injuries.

The call that they were responding to turned out to be a false alarm.
