DAWSON, GA (WALB) -

The Dawson Public Safety Department wants kids to have a productive school year.

The Police Department and Fire Department partnered together to put on a Back-to-School Cookout. They gave out free hot dogs and drinks to people at the Citgo Food Mart. Public Safety officials say they just want what's best for their students.

"Well we have three objectives this morning,” said Charlie Whitehead, Dawson Public Safety Director. “We want to give back to the community, encourage students to go to school and do their best and please grow up and become productive citizens."

Whitehead says they want to continue the cookout as an annual event after it was put to a halt two years ago due to lack of funding.
