YMCA grants help DCSS students

Dougherty County students are getting more support to help them succeed in the classroom.

Friday, the Albany Area YMCA and the Dougherty County school system signed off on the second 21st Century Partnership grant.  The program targets 125 at-risk students in grades one through five. The Y got two grants to expand the initiative.

"We're just grateful that they're a part of us and that we can contribute to them by offering our students the resources and it's a winner for everybody. We all win when children can excel," said Dr. David Mosely, the DCSS Superintendent.

"What it means for the school system is these are children that are deemed in most need of the math and reading assistance that's provided through the 21st century grant program. The YMCA, we're all about community, we're all about putting ourselves out there for our community," said Daniel Gillan, the Albany Area YMCA CEO and President.

Dr. David Mosely says they hope to initiate a swimming program with the YMCA this spring.
