Traffic heavy in Leesburg for school opening

LEESBURG, GA (WALB) - The first day of school is now over in Lee County, and that brings a surge in traffic.

Traffic congestion is always a concern in and around Leesburg as parents and school buses drop kids off.

County and school officials urged to people to be patient and expect congestion especially downtown and along Robert B Lee today and early next week during pickup and drop off times.

School officials say most of the parents take their kids on the first day and more will be riding the buses next week.

“It's crazy, you'd figure they would find a way to widen the roads at some point," said Ryan Meyers,

"We do have construction going on for the North bypass which will hopefully be completed in time for school next year," said Engineer Bob Alexander.

Alexander says this will make it safer for school buses taking them over the railroad tracks and US19.

Worth County Primary School had to sort through a traffic issue earlier in the week as waves of parents flooded the school campus to pick their children up at the end of the school day. Official say they put in place a plan to ease that situation.
