Man convicted after child's shotgun death

LEESBURG, GA (WALB) -  A Smithville man is sentenced to serve four years in prison, after being found guilty Tuesday night of involuntary manslaughter, in the death of a ten year old boy.

A Lee County jury deliberated three hours before finding 59-year-old Ronald Thomas guilty of all charges in his trial.

Prosecutors say Thomas left a loaded shotgun in his home where children were playing in July 2012.

The kids got it, and 10-year old Rickie Jenkins was shot and killed.

The start of Thomas' trial was delayed Monday morning when he did not show up for court.

Dougherty County Sheriff's Deputies found Thomas at his sister's home. He was brought to court and his trial began Monday afternoon.
